Studying Talk-in-interaction—Where Linguistics, Sociology and Psychology Meet

Abstract: The author argues for a version of conversation analysis that is supplemented by ethnographic procedures. This conception is meant to provide a methodologically refined access to semantic and practical features of naturally occurring talk. Moreover, it aims at broadening the scope of conversation analysis towards becoming a general methodology for the study of linguistic phenomena. This approach is currently applied to inquiries into the semantics of words in interactional exchanges, to analyses of forms of argumentation in different genres of conflict talk and to studies of the ways adolescents establish and negotiate group membership and personal/social identities in conversations.
