Volume 2, No. 3 September 2001Review Note: Lutz Ellrich (1999). Verschriebene Fremdheit. Die Ethnographie kultureller Brüche bei Clifford Geertz und Stephen Greenblatt [The Written Other. Ethnography and Cultural Discontinuities in the Work of Clifford Geertz and Stephen Greenblatt]Volker Barth (France)Abstract: In The written other Lutz ELLRICH analyses the conceptions of "the other" elaborated by Clifford GEERTZ and Stephen GREENBLATT. The focus lies clearly on the works of GEERTZ and especially on his emplotment technique. ELLRICH compares this technique of GEERTZ's with that of Hayden WHITE's in order to show the differences and similarities. The second part of the book, which is less convincing than the first, deals mainly with Stephen GREENBLATT. Here, ELLRICH deconstructs the New Historicism before applying his vision of the other on questions of modernity and postmodernity. Keywords: Geertz, Greenblatt, the other, emplotment, New Historicism, modernity, postmodernism This contribution is as a fulltext available in the French and German language.
