Abstract

Apart from nutrition and media consumption, sport and exercise play a central role in the educational discourse on health and well-being within German-speaking countries. In this paper I consider the "governmentality functions" (FOUCAULT, 2004a, 2004b) of sport and sports studies in health education. In addition I investigate how and by whom self- and external images are assigned and (re) constructed within this discourse in Germany. The aims, contents, and methods of government campaigns and measures for health education, as well as academic publications on sports and exercise in Germany from 2003 to 2010 are explored. The intended behavioral and lifestyle modifications, as well as the positions regarding questions of content, are critically reflected upon and discussed.
