Abstract

This article discusses the benefit of combining a quantitative and qualitative approach in studying social phenomena and illustrates it relative to the experience of individuals struggling with infertility. The combined use of the two methodologies allows capturing a comprehensive, nuanced and expansive picture of infertility, providing information to help bridge the gap between research and practice, and offering implications for policy and further research.

Author Biographies

Roni Berger, Adelphi University

Roni BERGER, PhD, LCSW. Born and raised in Israel, where she worked in direct practice and academia as well as supervisory and administrative positions, Dr. Berger holds a BSW, MSW and PhD from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Diploma in psychotherapy from Tel Aviv Medical School. She serves as a Professor at Adelphi University and a consultant to organizations nationally and internationally. She has published and presented extensively about group work, trauma and PTG, immigration and stepfamilies.

Marilyn S. Paul, Adelphi University School of Social Work, New York

Marilyn PAUL, PhD, LCSW is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work's Hudson Valley Center where she teaches courses in human behavior theory and social work practice, and advises and supervises students. She maintains a part-time clinical social work practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and has a long-time specialty in treating infertility and pregnancy loss.
