Shame Must Change Sides: An Autoethnographic Reflection on Abortion in the Context of My Own Pregnancy

Shame-induced silence is frequently regarded as the normative response to abortion. Yet what role do emotions such as joy, pride, anger, confidence, connectedness, or tenderness play in these experiences? Acknowledging this emotional diversity requires critical engagement with established discursive norms and transformative interventions that allow for new perspectives on abortion. In this article, I explore familial silence around abortion through an autoethnographic excerpt (Bochner & Ellis, 2022), situated theoretically within the sociology of emotions (Scherke, 2024), affect studies (Ahmed, 2004a, 2004b), and subjectivation research (Spies, 2017). Building on this foundation, I examine the displacement of shame as the dominant emotion and the concomitant emergence of new subject positions. This process of "changing sides" highlights a movement away from shame toward a shared discursive space, creating opportunities for a destigmatized societal engagement with abortion
